Who builds this

David Jack, Founder

PriceSpecter is built by David Jack, a reseller of 25 years who sources from estate sales, garage sales, and cleanouts across Central Florida and sells across three channels: the Captain Cleanout store on eBay for shippable higher-value pieces, Facebook Marketplace for the big and bulky, and six antique and collectible booths. He's also spent two and a half decades building software in big tech, which is why this started as a tool he needed himself rather than a product looking for a market. He uses PriceSpecter every day — most of its features exist because he ran into the problem himself while buying, selling, and collecting!

Why I built PriceSpecter

I got tired of standing in someone's garage guessing. Comps existed, but not in the ten seconds you actually have before someone else buys the box. So I built the thing I wanted: point a camera at it, get a real market read, decide. Everything here exists because I hit the problem myself — the lot Deal Finder because mystery boxes are where the money hides, Retirement Radar because knowing what's about to get scarce beats knowing what's already expensive, and Photo Search because writing listings is the part that keeps inventory sitting in the garage instead of selling.

How our estimates are calculated

Every price on this site comes from eBay active listing data — what sellers are asking right now. We do not have access to completed-sale data, so we never claim to show sold prices. When you search, we pull comparable live listings, discard the ones that clearly are not the same item, and read the middle of what remains as the typical asking price. The spread of those listings becomes the range. The count measures current supply — how many comparable items are listed — not how fast they sell; we have no sell-through data.

The Specter Score summarises how much to trust a given estimate. It goes up when there are many comparable listings that agree with each other on price, and down when the sample is small or the prices are scattered. A suggested listing price is derived from the same set, positioned slightly below the typical ask when you want the item to move.

Retirement Radar estimates work differently. A retirement is only called confirmed when the manufacturer or our lifecycle data source has published an end date. Everything else is labelled as an estimate with a confidence level, derived from how long a product has been in production and how its availability is described. We show the reasoning rather than a bare verdict, and we never present an estimate as an announcement.

All of it is a market read, not an appraisal. Asking prices are not sale prices, condition changes everything, and no automated estimate replaces looking carefully at the item in front of you.
